Mountain Top, Pennsylvania is quite unique, in that it is a true community. It is not a city, town or borough, but is defined, as a census-designated place (CDP) in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. That is, a collection of smaller communities, treated for statistical purposes as a single entity.
Mountain Top consists of the entirety of Dorrance Township, Fairview Township, Rice Township, Slocum Township, and Wright Township, with a population totaling approximately 15,000.
The official elevation of Mountain Top, Pa is 1558 feet above sea level, and covers a total area of about 69 miles.
Like its neighbor to the south (Hazleton), Mountain Top has had its share of debate regarding the spelling of it's moniker. Though it is generally accepted that the area's proper name is "Mountain Top," there has been some discussion as to whether it should actually be "Mountaintop." The local historical society uses the spelling "Mountain Top". The United States Postal Service uses the spelling "Mountain Top" for ZIP Code 18707 and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spells it Mountain Top on a Pennsylvania driver's licence. The local newspaper, however, the Mountaintop Eagle, uses the Mountaintop spelling in both its title as well as any reference to its location.
Mountaintop is also home to one of the regions largest industrial parks, the Crestwood Industrial Park.
