The history of Sugarloaf PA goes back farther than every other nearby municipality, except Nescopeck, from which Sugarloaf was carved.
The community derives its name from the Sugarloaf Mountain, and was annexed from Nescopeck Township in April 1809, which, at the time, also included the Townships of Butler, Hazle, and Black Creek.
The earliest settlement was in 1769, in a land grant from Thomas and John Penn to John Foreman. Other early local names were the Osterdock family who are believed to have been here at the time of the Sugarloaf Massacre in 1780, and perhaps participated in the bloody battle.
