Demographics and Statistics for
White Haven, Pennsylvania
The White Haven, Pennsylvania area is a popular stop along the Western edge of the Pocono's, particularly for white water rafters. Unfortunately, it would seem that tourism is slowly edging out homesteading in this town, which was once an important transportation center for the anthracite coal industry.
As of the most recent census data from 2009, White Haven's population is 1,146 people, dropping 2.2% since the 2000 census.
While White Haven's cost of living is 20.36% Lower than the U.S. average, the unemployment rate in White Haven, PA is staggering 9.80 percent. This is significantly higher than both surrounding communities, as well as the national average of 4.60%. Recent job growth is also negative, decreasing by 1%.
An interesting parallel can be drawn with Weatherly, PA. In fact, the two communities are quite alike from several perspectives. Obviously statistics show similarities, but historically both communities were critical to the transportation of natural resources to the rest of the country. Geographically, both communities are somewhat isolated from other towns. Essentially, there are no nearby neighboring communities to share ideas, projects, expenses, etc. These two communities must stand on their own, perhaps a testiment to those that call both White Haven and Weatherly, PA ...home.
